People are always raving about overnight oats, and I get it – they are quick and convenient and you can make a bunch at a time if you want – but, they have to be kept in the fridge and typically you eat them cold.
I’m not about that.
Especially in the winter time, we want to be favouring foods that are warming and help our body run harmoniously with the cold weather outside. So even though it takes a whopping 5 minutes in the morning, I make my oatmeal from scratch so it is warm, fresh and super delicious! It also allows me to get creative – I can switch up the flavour a little bit depending how i’m feeling. Also, from an energetic perspective, when we cook foods and eat them right away we increase the “prana” or life energy that we are getting from our food. When we prepare it and let it sit, the life energy sort of fades away… Ideally we want to be eating to nourish our body in an optimal way, so eating our meals when they are rich with life force is best!
So here is my recipe for my super simple, warming cinnamon cardamom oats!
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup gluten free oats
- 2 tbsp chia seeds
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 cup almond milk
- 1 tbsp almond butter
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon – more to taste
- 1/2 tsp cardamom – more to taste
- 1 tsp maple syrup (or honey) – more to sweeten if you like things sweeter
Additional Toppings that make this extra delicious, but are totally optional:
- Shredded coconut
- Pumpkin Seeds
- Sunflower Seeds
- Buckwheat groats (big fan…)
For these additional toppings I like to just sprinkle them on – I’ve never actually measured them out!
How to make the magic happen:
-
Place all ingredients in a small pot over medium/low heat, stirring so that all the ingredients mix well together
-
Continue to stir throughout – I like to taste this mixture periodically to see if I want to add a little more spice on any given day. I would also suggest adding a little more nut milk or water to the recipe if you like your oats a little more watery as they tend to soak up the liquid quickly!
-
After about 5-7 minutes this bad boy should be done – you can sprinkle your additional toppings on the finished product in the bowl, or you can mix it all in the pot. I like to mix it up a bit and alternate putting them in the pot, and sprinkling them on top. I’m a rebel like that.
So there you have it! In just under 10 minutes you have made yourself a delicious, fresh, warm and warming oatmeal that is perfect for those chilly winter mornings!
